In this activity, the child will imitate animal sounds that you make while looking at animal toys or pictures.
Learning Area(s): Language and Communication
MATERIALS
- Pictures of farm animals OR plastic farm animals in a bag
LET'S PLAY
Sing the chant, “Farmer Round, Farmer Round. Can you make this animal sound?” Then hold up a toy animal or picture of the animal and make its sound (e.g., “moooooo” for a cow). Now prompt your child to make the same sound. Repeat with a variety of animals. To maintain your child’s interest, act out the movement of the animal when modeling its sound.
Another way to play this game is to take turns with your child reaching into a bag, pulling out a toy animal, and making the sound of that animal.
TIPS
- You could play this game after looking at a picture book about animals with your child.
- To help your child learn even more about what a farm is, introduce toys, pictures, or real objects (keep safety in mind) that go with a farm, such as a toy barn, fence, hay bale, food trough, tractor, or other farm equipment.
- Add variety to the game by using other categories such as zoo animals, or by using a set of different vehicles that might make different sounds or move in different ways (e.g., car, train, airplane, boat, bus).
