In this game, your child will practice reading and spelling words with long vowel sounds.
Before you play, make a game board by printing the template or by making your own. Randomly write one word in each space from the word lists in Tips. You might focus on one vowel sound at a time. (Hint: A long vowel “says its name,” like the o sound in the word no.)
Tell your child that you are going to play a reading and spelling game. Together, read each word on the board. Allow your child to go first and have them flip a coin. If they get heads, they move two spaces; if they get tails, they move one space. Encourage them to read the word they land on and assist as needed. Then cover the word with your hand and have your child spell it. If they spell it correctly, they can move forward by one more space; if they spell it wrong, show the word and have them spell it. Then it’s your turn. Take turns playing until you reach the end! As you play, give your child lots of encouragement as they learn how to spell.
