LET'S PLAY
Introduce the activity by reminding your child that sentences are made of words, and putting words in a certain order is how we share ideas. Explain that they are going to play a game where they have to guess what the sentence says.
Think of a simple sentence; for example, The girl ate her soup. Write one word on each sticky note and mix up the words in the sentence. Then have your child put the words in order so that the sentence makes sense and read it aloud.
Continue with other sentences.
To add some fun, invite your child to write some simple sentences out of order and have you guess the sentence!
TIPS
- Start this activity with short, simple sentences. If your child is ready for a challenge, increase the number of words in the sentences or add words that are more difficult.
- You can look at the Dolch word lists or the Fry word lists, which show high frequency words by grade level. Don’t forget to add some words from the grade levels below! You can also include your child’s spelling words from school.
- If your child needs support, put the sentence in the correct order and have them echo read it. Echo reading is when a child repeats something you’ve read.
