PRINT ACTIVITY

Crumple, Crinkle, and Smoosh!

Your child will practice crumpling different kinds of paper.

Learning Area(s): Language and Communication; Physical Development

MATERIALS

  • Different types of paper for crumpling: wrapping paper, notebook paper, construction paper, tissue paper, parchment paper, paper from a brown paper bag, a magazine page, paper envelopes with cellophane “windows” (from junk mail), etc.

LET'S PLAY

As you show your child each type of paper, name it so he knows what it is called. Show him how to crumple and crinkle up the paper, encouraging him to listen to the different sounds each type of paper makes. Some paper is loud when it is crumpled, some is quiet. Narrate as he crumples and crinkles it himself, and talk about the actions he takes and different sounds he makes with each type of paper. You may need to help him crumple the papers at first or provide hand-over-hand assistance by gently helping him squeeze his hand around the crumpled paper. Have fun crumpling the paper together.

TIPS

  • Allow your child to throw, drop, kick, and hit at the crumpled and crinkled paper as well. There are so many ways to explore the fun sounds these papers will make!
  • Watch your baby closely to make sure he doesn’t swallow any of the paper.
