PRINT ACTIVITY

Karaoke Time!

Children will sing made-up or favorite songs using toilet paper or paper towel rolls as microphones.

Learning Area(s): Language and Communication

MATERIALS

  • Three toilet paper or paper towel rolls of different lengths

LET'S PLAY

Start by showing your child the different size rolls. Show her how to hold them up to her mouth and make sounds into them. They can be silly nonsense sounds or words. Discuss how your voice sounds louder when you hold the roll to your mouth, like when you talk into a microphone. Play with how the different size rolls sound and the different silly noises you can make.

Once she is familiar with how to hold the roll up to her mouth to make her voice sound louder, show her how to sing a song into the roll like a microphone. Start by singing a song together that she is familiar with. Toddlers can take turns performing with the “microphones.” Play some music in the background to get the full karaoke feel!

TIPS

  • It is okay if infants just make silly sounds into the rolls and don’t understand how to sing songs into a microphone. This is still fun and good practice listening and expressing themselves.
  • If older toddlers enjoy performing, let them put on a show for the rest of your family. That is a great activity for building self-esteem.
