PRINT ACTIVITY

Which Two Sound the Same?

Your child will match two pictures or objects that have the same ending sounds.

Learning Area(s): Reading and Writing

MATERIALS

pictures of common words that end with consonant blends (two letters that you blend together when you say the word, like at the end of the words desk and mask)

LET'S PLAY

Begin by telling your child that they are going to play a memory game. Lay out all of the picture cards so that your child can see them. Invite your child to read each word with you. Then shuffle the cards and turn them face down in rows of four or five. Explain how to play by saying, “We are going to play a memory game! In this game, you will flip over a card and read the word at the top. Then you’ll flip over another card and read the word. If the two words end with the same sounds, you get to keep the cards! If they don’t end with the same sounds, you’ll turn them back over and try to remember where they are for your next turn. Whoever gets the most matches wins the game!”

Take the first turn to show your child how to play. For both cards, read the word and emphasize the blended letters at the end. Tell your child whether they end in the same sounds. Then it’s your child’s turn! If your child matches correctly, have them say the sounds at the end of the words and keep the cards. Take turns playing this game until you make all matches.

TIPS

  • If your child can’t remember the name of a picture, help them sound out the word at the top of the card.
  • If the memory game is too difficult for your child, you can play with the cards face up. Have your child practice reading the words until they find the matching card.
  • To make this activity easier, start with 10 cards (5 matches). You can add more as you keep playing!
  • You can cut pictures out of newspapers, magazines, advertisements, etc. to make your own cards. Glue each picture onto paper or put each one in an envelope to open. Write the word at the top of the card or on the outside of the envelope.
